Black Rock City 2015
See the road curve...
(Pretty sure we are looking at Donniker from about 4:00.)
Center Camp (taken on Arcade street)
Always a fun place to hang out
From Laffing Sal (the outermost street) looking in
Can't quite make out the Man in the distance
Interesting stuff about the map:
The street names change every year, but they always begin with A, B, C, D, E, etc. Except Esplanade. The innermost street is always Esplanade
You arrive from the bottom of the map, driving up onto what would become 6:00 road.
The purple shaded parts on the map represent approximate location of theme and support camps. The rest are just people with their tents and RVs.
There are no stop signs or traffic signals. There are street signs at every intersection which, inevitably, get stolen by the end.
The max speed for motor vehicles is 5mph, so bikes are the fastest mode of transport.
It took ten minutes to walk from our camp at 5:00 & E to Center Camp at 6:00 & A.
Camps are designated by small survey flags and intersections by corner posts. Otherwise, tents, structures, and vehicles define the "roads."
No one can camp in the circular area in the middle, between the city and the Man. It is reserved for the many (usually giant) art installations.
Art installations exist far beyond the Temple.
There are post offices!
The distance from Esplanade street to the Man is a little less than half a mile. A bit of a walk!
The little circles on the map, like at 9:00 & Ballyhoo, are plazas, ringed with interesting camps and art in the center.
You can see the Man, weather permitting, from every clock-named road.
A trash fence surrounds the city in the shape of a pentagon, enclosing approximately five square miles.
Our camp's dimensions were approximately 50' x 100'.
It takes about 20 minutes to ride the entire length of Esplanade (from 10:00 to 2:00) on a bicycle.
Mountains surround the desert, all the way around. I know how dusty it is by how clearly I can see the mountains.
Awesome aerial photo I got a hold of; our camp is highlighted
